Microlite BackupEDGE Overview
BackupEDGE is a high-performance, easy to use, fully integrated backup software, restore and disaster recovery solution for UNIX and Linux operating systems that protects the user from the headaches involved in directly managing individual actions by using a modular architecture providing great flexibility in implementing and maintaining backup strategies.
BackupEDGE supports a wide variety of storage devices, including tape drives, CD-R/RW, DVD-RAM, DVD -RW, DVD -R, DVD +RW, DVD +R and combo devices, as well as changers, libraries and autoloaders. In many instances it can work with devices that are not natively supported by the operating system.
For complete, automated disaster recovery, BackupEDGE includes* RecoverEDGE. RecoverEDGE allows complete bare-metal recovery after a hardware failure without having to re-install anything, and that includes the operating system.
BackupEDGE employs its own cryptographically strong random number generator and a powerful combination of symmetric and asymmetric algorithms to encrypt and decrypt archived data. It is completely standards-based. Individual archives are protected by separate, randomly generated 256 bit AES encryption keys, which are in turn protected by a 2048 bit RSA key pair. Encryption is fully integrated into the product and performed at the file level, providing the following benefits.
- Only data that needs to be protected is encrypted
- Overall performance stays high as only critical files are subject to CPU intensive encryption
- Full compatibility with other product features such as verification, quick file access, and disaster recovery is maintained
- Each encrypted file is pre-compressed to ensure that no space is lost due to the inability of tape hardware compression implementations to compress encrypted data

- Multi-Volume - BackupEDGE will automatically span multiple volumes if necessary while performing a backup. In the case of unattended (scheduled) backups, BackupEDGE can be configured to send email notification when a new volume is needed.
- Wildcard Support - BackupEDGE allows extensive use of wildcarding to specify files for backup or restore. Plus, wildcards can be used to exclude files from backup or compression.
- Raw Device Backups - BackupEDGE can archive an entire raw device/partition. Optionally, external (user-defined) shell scripts may be called to shutdown/restart any application that uses the raw partition.
- Master/Differential/Incremental Backups - BackupEDGE can perform a Master Backup of your entire system, or an Differential Backup of only those files which have been created or changed since the previous Master Backup. For those that require very small backup windows, BackupEDGE's Incremental Backups back up only those files which have changed since the last Differential or Incremental Backup.
- Unattended Operation - With BackupEDGE you never have to worry about the routine details of system backups. BackupEDGE will automatically backup your data every night, verify the archive, mail the results to the user of your choice, and print a comprehensive summary. BackupEDGE's advanced notification system allows for plain text, HTML, numeric pager, and alphanumeric pager messages to one or more recipients. BackupEDGE also provides a "failures only" option to alert additional personnel in the event of a failed nightly backup.
